Description: Truing bicycle wheels (tightening and loosening spokes to ensure that the rim runs straight without any side-to-side wobbles) is an art form that takes experience and a great deal of patience to master. In addition, current truing stand designs are imprecise and utilize mechanical feelers that scrape against the wheel, risking damage to the surface finish. The purpose of this project is to design an Arduino-based touch-free truing stand that uses ultrasonic distance sensors to determine if the wheel is true within tolerance. The stand will light LED’s to indicate which direction the wheel is wobbling and have a routine to check the dish (centered-ness of the rim on the hub) and light a separate set of LED’s to indicate the direction in which the rim is off center.

By: John Hanley
Booth: 29 - North
Presentation Time: 3:00 pm
Related Course(s): CS 352 taught me about the field of Evolutionary Computation and exposed me to Learning Classifier Systems.
Description: Chagas disease is a neglected tropical disease that is endemic to every Central and South American country. Chagas is transmitted through the feces of some species of Triatominae. The Triatominae that transmit Chagas to humans are nocturnal and feed on vertebrate blood. In Guatemala, the main vector of Chagas disease is Triatoma dimidiata, which is a shy feeder that is not very mobile and seeks dark refuges near its hosts to hide in during the day. For five villages in Chiquimula, Guatemala, detailed demographic, socioeconomic, and entomologic surveys were conducted for every house in each village. The goal of this work is to use Learning Classifier Systems (LCS) to determine which parameters in the survey are significantly related to Triatoma dimidiata infestation for each village.
