Description: We would like to build a modified version of Tetris using Java script. We will have 7 unique Tetris pieces, each of which is made up of 4 individual blocks. We will randomly generate one of these seven pieces and initialize the piece at the top of the “game window”. The piece will automatically begin to fall. The player can then move the piece to the left using the left arrow key and to the right using the right arrow key. The pieces will rotate to the left when the down arrow key is pressed and to the right when the up arrow key is pressed, and the blocks fall-speed will increase when the spacebar is pressed. As each piece moves down the screen, it will stop as soon as the next incremental move will cause any of the already stationary blocks at the bottom of the screen to overlap with the moving piece. Every time a block comes to rest, the program will then check all of the rows to see and any of them are complete, i.e. there are no gaps in a row. If a row is complete it will disappear, and all of the blocks above it wall fall down one row. We will also incorporate a color changing scheme for the blocks in motion. Every time a block is rotated it will change color. There will be a scoring system where: for every row that is complete the player will get 50 points, and for every block that is generated and then moved to the bottom of the screen the player will receive 5 points.

Related Course(s): CS 201 - Operating Systems CS 222 - Computer Architecture CS 295 - Programming Languages
Description: Today, code written in memory- and type-unsafe languages like C and C++ is still common, despite the availability of alternatives that can provide better security guarantees. As a result, modern compilers and operating systems employ a battery of strategies, called *exploit mitigations*, which increase the level of difficulty required for attackers to take control of these programs. However, figuring out what types of mitigations are enabled on a given system can be a nightmare for security engineers. The defaults have changed with virtually every version of every major operating system, and can be overridden by administrators or software developers. An audit is necessary, and an automated tool can help. This tool detects exploit mitigations at the operating system level using two strategies. First, it detects non-executable program segments by affecting its own control flow in ostensibly malicious ways and measuring the system's response. Second, it detects address space layout randomization (ASLR) by carrying out a large number of memory allocations in order to measure which strategies are employed and how much entropy they actually provide. Future work might detect compiler-based mitigations such as stack canaries by analyzing individual compiled binaries.
